Le Samourai moves in the rarefied, mythical space of film noir, yet we are in the streets, nightclub and underground of 1967 Paris. In Le Samourai this theme of solitude is embodied in the hired killer Jeff Costello, depicted while on a series of increasingly mysterious and dangerous contracts, with the police gradually closing in on him and a beautiful nightclub pianist, Valérie, mesmerising him. Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï depicts one of the most interesting characters from the French New Wave: Alain Delon's Jef Costello. A cold and almost completely silent contract killer, Jef is explicitly meant to symbolize the Japanese idea of the samurai from which the film gets its title.

Jim Jarmusch paid homage to Le Samouraï with the 1999 crime-drama, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, starring Forest Whitaker as a meditative, loner assassin who lives by the bushido code. In the same manner that Jef Costello has a huge ring of keys that enables him to steal any Citroën DS, the hitman Ghost Dog has an electronic "key" to break into luxury cars.

Le Samouraï is everything I expected, and much more. I often see the word "cool" around this film, and yes, it's the fucking epitome of cool. It's a truly minimalistic film, with little-to-no backstory, exposition, dialogue, etc., and a film where most of the story is conveyed through visuals. Melville's style is so elegant and precise. It contains some brilliant camerawork with many

I was not so sure there's more going on besides flashy, technical prowess, until the ending, which snaps everything into focus. (Reading some Letterboxd reviews & other writings on the Film #71 of the June Challenge I finally watched Lord Cookie's avatar! It seems like the dangerously overused word to describe Le Samourai is "cool." but… that's what this is. The epitome of cool, Jef Costello is a hitman who slips up big time during a job and is forced to pay the consequences. It's a perfectly paced thriller, letting the tension build slowly and deliberately.

It’s precise, cool, and beautiful. Alain Delon’s cold, subdued performance brings the film full circle as Jef Costello gets closer to the end of the story. The score is gorgeous and a joy to listen to. The cinematography is stunning and makes this film so elegant.
